Digital currencies do not have physical attributes and are available only in digital form. Transactions involving digital currencies are made using computers or electronic or digital wallets connected to the internet or designated networks. In contrast, physical currencies, such as banknotes and minted coins, are tangible, meaning they have definite physical attributes and characteristics. Transactions involving such currencies are made possible only when their holders have physical possession of these currencies.

Ethereum is a blockchain computing platform. It was conceived as a platform for developing applications that would benefit from the utilization of decentralization, distributed consensus, and smart contracts. Literally hundreds of Ethereum-based projects now exist, projects that have nothing to do with cryptocurrency. As for Ether, it is a cryptocurrency based on the Ethereum blockchain.

The cryptocurrency miner’s work is different from that of a gold miner, of course, but the result is much the same: both make money. For cryptocurrency mining, all of the work happens on a mining computer or rig connected to the cryptocurrency network — no burro riding or gap-toothed gold panners required!

Although a maximum of 21 million bitcoins can be minted, it’s likely that the number of bitcoins circulating remains substantially below that number. Bitcoin holders can lose access to their bitcoins, such as by losing the private keys to their Bitcoin wallets or passing away without sharing their wallet details. A June 2020 study by the crypto forensics firm Chainalysis estimated that up to 20% of the Bitcoin already issued may be permanently lost.

Given the substantially lower costs associated with proof-of-stake, you might think it’s a better way to validate transactions. It does, however, still have downsides. For example, even though there’s no concern that an entity can gain control over 51% of a network’s computing power with proof-of-stake, if an entity could gain control of 51% of all outstanding tokens it could hold the network and its stakeholders hostage. Of course, there’s not much likelihood this will happen with high-market-cap digital currencies. However, virtual currencies with low market caps may be susceptible to this vulnerability.

The world of crypto now contains many coins and tokens that we feel unable to verify. In those situations, our Dexscan product lists them automatically by taking on-chain data for newly created smart contracts. We do not cover every chain, but at the time of writing we track the top 70 crypto chains, which means that we list more than 97% of all tokens.

The very first cryptocurrency was Bitcoin. Since it is open source, it is possible for other people to use the majority of the code, make a few changes and then launch their own separate currency. Many people have done exactly this. Some of these coins are very similar to Bitcoin, with just one or two amended features (such as Litecoin), while others are very different, with varying models of security, issuance and governance. However, they all share the same moniker — every coin issued after Bitcoin is considered to be an altcoin.

Price volatility has long been one of the features of the cryptocurrency market. When asset prices move quickly in either direction and the market itself is relatively thin, it can sometimes be difficult to conduct transactions as might be needed. To overcome this problem, a new type of cryptocurrency tied in value to existing currencies — ranging from the U.S. dollar, other fiats or even other cryptocurrencies — arose. These new cryptocurrency are known as stablecoins, and they can be used for a multitude of purposes due to their stability.

This opens the way for a much wider range of investors to be able to add some exposure to cryptocurrency in their portfolios.
